Coastal Resilience Grant Internship Opportunities, 2019-2020
The bluffs, beaches, and harbor infrastructure of Southeastern Wisconsin are vulnerable to to coastal hazards including erosion, coastal storms, and fluctuating water levels. These coastal hazards can threaten coastal properties and impair economic security of the region's tourism and commerce. Planning, preparing for, and adapting to coastal hazards can enhance community resilience and strengthen coastal economies.
Two new 1-year projects will help build resilience to coastal hazards in coastal municipalities in Racine County. This project is being supported by the WI Coastal Management Program with funding provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Resilience Grants (CRG) Program. Please see project-specific internship opportunity announcements for details.
Currently enrolled graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Individuals who graduated in December 2018 or will graduate in May 2019 may also be considered.
All current internships have been filled. Thank you for your interest.
Restoration and Invasive Species - Seasonal Internships
Historical landscape changes as a result of agriculture and urban development reduced the size of natural habitat and created pathways for pollution to surface waters. Today, the Root River, Pike River, and Wind Point Watersheds all suffer some form of impairment as a result. In recognition of the importance of such features to environmental sustainability, the City of Racine Public Health Department has undertaken a number of environmental restoration/preservation projects.
Seasonal internships support restoration activities at North Beach, Zoo Beach, Samuel Myers Park, and Olsen Prairie, with the goal of enhancing stormwater infiltration, diversifying habitat, and providing public education. These projects are being supported by the US Forest Service, WI Coastal Management Program (NOAA), and Fund for Lake Michigan. Please see project specific internship opportunity announcements for details.
